  The ICD harddrive did stop spinning once. I called up ICD; they instructed
 that I opened the casing, and give the spindle a spin manually, and
 everything will be fine. I did just that and everything has been fine since
 then. ICD said that that's a known problem with the Seagate drive, but that
 the solution is fairly simple (giving it a manual spin).

This has probably been asked before...

Is there a way to add a 68881/82 to an ST? Hardware-wise. I relize that
software-wise, theres probably not a whole helluva lot of software
written to take advantage of an 81/82. But I think it would be a fun
hardware hack anyways :-)

BTW: I have an STfm, but am considering upgrading to a Mega STe...

Sorry Keith, but Atari Corp has systematically killed off its US dealer
network..

If you're interested in specific products like NeoDesk, it'd probably
be better to contact the manufacturers directly, or check the advertisements
in Atari magazines for mail-order sources..

Hi everybody.

The sun is shining hot in germany, an I have the following problem:

I am using an ST with 2.5 MB, TOS1.4, Seagate ST157N with an ICD- hostadapter
and a lot of stuff on it. I have been using my harddisk for a very long time
now, but recently my ST started behaving strage :

I can boot from my HD, open windows and so on.

But sometimes, after leaving a program, IT happens :
I return to desktop with NO open windows (I had some opened berfore entering
the program). As I try to open a window, the alart-box "4 Windows already
open, please close winsdows before opening new ones" (roughly translated)
apears. WHY ????
When I select "close.." or "close window" from the menue bar, my ST
starts playing "dead man".

Did I catch a virus (if so : how can I get rid of it)  or is this just
a strage GEMDOS bug??????

Is the figure "32K" a constant that you could tweak up to, say,
"256K"?  That would be fine for most purposes (at least for me).
Granted that would increase memory requirements for editing small files
(I assume), but I could live with that.

Levee was my favorite for quite some time.  It's fast and seems quite
robust.

Hi!

Some friends of mine would like to use Elvis like me - but there is a nasty
problem: You can't do that using a german keyboard.

All <alt><shift>-keys generate <a><s>... key sequences. But on our
keyboard all the special "UNIX" characters like [,],{,},\ and so on are
shift-alt-combinations.

You shure can map them in INPUT-mode, but what about the command line?

I am using a software mapped american kb, which brings new problems with
other programs.

My idea is this: Any key, which reports a valid ASCII char should be
accepted as souch. Only if there is no valid char, it's a good idea to manage
the keys this way.

Would it be easy to add this feature an conquer a hole new continent? ;-)

Dear Chums,

Three questions about hardware...

1) I want to fit a hard disk to my Mega 2 ST. Has anyone any experience of
internal ones? I think the box is dead neat, and would prefer not to add
another.

2) Does anyone know the status of the putative Atari-UK DMA port transputer add
on box? There were strong rumours about it around 8 months ago, but since I
have heard nothing.

3) I may want lots more numerical bang. Would I be better to buy a TT (I
imagine I would need the maths coprocessor, if that's an option) or an ATW?
Can anyone let me know how much an ATW is in Britain these days?

Hello again, I'm back on the net.

Our project moved to another location, which did
cut us from the world for about a Month.
(I have a new email address; see signature).

My last mail to the net were some questions about
my MEGA STE, I bought just then. I promissed to
summarise, so here it is.

The original postings included two questions about
booting from hard disk and some tests of ST applications
running on the MEGA STE.

Man I never have got so many responses from the net.
Thanks all of you. I have tried to thank everyone
individually by email, but I could not check for
bounced mail (as we were cut off, you know).


1. The first problem was that DEGAS messes up the screen, when
   you switch from menupage to drawpage. (I mean the good old
   DEGAS, not DEGAS ELITE which I didnot test).

   The symptom:
   After a few switchings, the right side of the screen (about
   1 cm/ 0.5 inch) becomes visible on the left side of the
   screen which is annoying. You have to re-boot the system
   to get rid of it.

I got the following mail from Lars-Erik

I am however not sure that this is the case, as I went to my local dealer
and tested all the MEGA STEs available. They all had the same symptoms.

Atari in the Netherlands (=Atari Benelux) reacted as follows:

  1. Problem not know.
  2. Hardware for screens in 1040STE is identical to MEGA STE,
     so there can be no differences between them.
  3. Problem must lie in the sofware itself, as TOS 2.05 is new.
     They recommended another drawing package.

So, that's it.


2. The floppy drive light stays on after booting, when there is no
   floppy in it at boot-time.

I got a lot of responses, telling me that this is 'normal'.
I can (have to-) accept this, but I find it a little bit strange
that this light is much more brighter than the power led.


3. It takes ages to boot from harddisk. Even when an empty formatted
   diskette is in the floppy drive.

Even this seems to be 'normal' for a MEGA STE.

I got some mail telling me that if I just press a key, the actual loading
from hard disk starts earlier.

Even after trying, it did not work out for me.

Thanks to some people, I found out that you should wait with pressing
a key or moving the mouse until the hard disk spinns normally.

And it turned out to be that this was my problem, as I only have a
small desk, and I have to reposition the mouse everytime I want to
switch on the system.

It works ok when I take care to not touch the mouse and keyboard
immediately after switching on.

As I stated before in comp.os.minix, I intend to do a TT port.
The problem is that I'm still waiting for the delivery of the TT.
It seems they ran out of keyboards.

The changes to get things running are not that big.
However, in order to utilize the TT hardware fully, one would also
abandon shadowing. This is more work.
And finally I want to support some of the new TT peripherals.
That is: the real time clock, the scsi port and the additional rs232 ports.

I don't think this will be available from Prentice Hall before 1992.
I intend to post a beta test version to comp.os.minix before though.

I do not know if anyone has the ZZ-COM communications program outside
of France, or maybe even Europe, but the author, indirectly, has asked
that his patch to ZZ-COM to make it run on Mega STe's be made
available through anonymous ftp.  So I had it placed on laas.laas.fr
in the directory

Last I heard Gribnif Software had gotten ahold of the distribution rights
and had turned STalker and STeno into separate packages, and is
charging (I think) $15 to upgrade each to V3.0.  Of course, I bought the
two as a single package for about 18 bucks, and if Gribnif thinks I'm
gonna shell out 30 bucks to upgrade, they are out of their minds...
especially when there are far better telecom packages available PD.

I've heard Gribnif usually has outrageous upgrade fees... one of the
reasons I steer clear of their products.

Speaking of telecom software, has anyone tried out Stealth?  They really
toot their own horns in the ads, but I haven't heard any real feedback
on the program.  I'd need a pretty convincing argument to change from
Uniterm (for VT100 emulation) and Dterm (for general bbs usage).  Flash
is a good tool for beginners, but I didn't find STalker useful at all.

Comments about "DC Homey"..

I dunno... suppose you're in a completely "BrainDead" application that
doesn't process mouse input properly..?

(I can think of a zillion examples...  you forget to put a disk in A: and
the program just freaks out...   you get a dialogue box that wants you
to "Abort or Continue" with the default set to Continue.. and naturally
the mouse pointer is disabled...  what'cha gonna do..?)

Hit ALT CTL LSHIFT H and the mouse is returned to a known starting position..
even without the pointer being displayed, you can at least hit the Cancel
button a whole lot more easily than just clicking at random..

So it's obscure...  would everyone rather have Double Click developing on
the Mac instead..?

That is an excellent example of why we write these "useful ditties"- IMHO.

The actual purpose was brought about by the dimming display of our Stacy and
the ease of losing the mouse cursor.  It's very frustrating to try to find the
cursor with the trackball especially in graphic laiden programs...  So, off the
top of my head I thought of a "homing" program that would put the cursor in a
specific position on the screen- the result Yet Another Program of the Week
DC Homey.

What the users end up doing with one of our programs is up to them obviously,
even -sadly- file 13.  ;)

We (Double Click) have a very ambitious undertaking upon us.  It isn't a burden
but a labor of trying to boost the Atari market and heighten our public
recognition.  We had hoped that others (developers and hobbiest) would follow
suit and start to "rejuvinate" the user market....  Whether or not this
actually happens only time will tell I guess.
